 In historical terms, it is the first union of the north-west in a territorial entity, but also cultural and political importance. In recent centuries, the West is identified mainly with the former domains of the House of Savoy and then the continental part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, which included in addition to the Piedmont, Valle d'Aosta and Liguria.
The "North West territory" encompasses four of the country's 20 regions.
