Reality and memory of our traditions but also a testimony to ancient vanished crafts, the cultural background of our lives.
To organize a local nativity is, for the most part, the entire city (or districts) and are usually performed by its inhabitants.
The nativity scene is a Christian tradition consisting of a short theatrical performance that is intended to represent the birth of Jesus in a setting that is built for the setting of the story of the Nativity.
The most suggestive nativity scene is held in Matera, (Sassi, the old city) which according to the Guinness book of world records is Europe's most attended event and the world's biggest.
History's first recorded nativity scene was in Greccio, near Rieti in 1223.
Since then, the tradition spread to the rest of Italy and in other Christian countries.
Today, living nativity scenes are organized in almost all the Western Christian world, not only Catholic, but also by members of other churches. The period in which it is performed is the holiday season. The setting is not necessarily that of the time of the birth of Christ, but, often, the nativity scene is an opportunity to show ancient crafts of the place now threatened with extinction.
