Made in South Italy
Did you know that Italy is the leading European country for organic farming? There are eight regulatory bodies behind the production of organic produce, which includes fruits, vegetables, olives, olive oil, grapes, wine, grains and animal fodder.
Significantly, six of the eight southern regions lead the nation in organic farming, accounting for about 75 percent of Italy's organic produce. Sardinia and Sicily alone account for about half of the land devoted to organic farming.
In 1999 more than half of Italy's organic produce was exported. Italy is also the second largest European producer of olive oil; 2 / 3 of production are represented by olive oil with 37 DOP extra-virgin spread throughout the country.
There are about 6180 mills, 88% of Italy's olive oil production comes from the southern regions.
Puglia and Calabria alone account for over 70% of the total olive oil produced in Italy.
